You know who Rob Bell is. I mean come on. He’s the former pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church. He’s an author, podcaster, and surfer. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Rob last week when he was in town for his Everything is Spiritual tour. The audio is a little different in this episode since I’m talking to Rob on location as opposed to my home studio, but it still turned out great.
Rob just started this tour so he may be coming to your town. Check out his tour page.
New Sponsor!
I’m very excited to announce to you our newest sponsor: Greatest Stories Ever Told. GSET is an independent publisher.
This is a self-paced e-course. The entire course is available to you once you register and you own it forever! You’ll also get access to our private facebook group where you can go with questions, comments, and feedback.
I’ve been podcasting for years. I’ve gained advertisers, I’ve been ranked very high in iTunes, I’ve been asked to contribute to books in my field, I’ve spoken at conferences, the list goes on, and I’ll be honest, I’m not that special. I have a message that I believe in but so do a lot of other people, the difference is that I’ve embraced the platform of podcasting.
So what can podcasting do for you? How will this change your life?
Maybe you want to grow your business.
Maybe you want to have relationships with people of similar interests from across the globe.
Maybe you’ve been blogging for awhile, you’ve even had decent traffic, but you just haven’t seen the results you’ve wanted, and haven’t been able to make your voice heard above the crowd.
Podcasting can be the avenue to reach your goals and attain your dreams.
You don’t need any prior technical knowledge about podcasting to take this e-course. I’ll teach it all.
A month before I started my podcast I had no technical know-how, and when I started I only had enough to get by, but I had determination and so I kept going. If you go back and listen to some earlier episodes of my podcast you’ll hear that the quality on some of them is not very good, so I had to learn from those mistakes, and every episode got a little bit better. So you have to understand that I’m taking the collective knowledge of doing almost 100 podcast episodesand giving it to you. So that my knowledge at 100 episodes can be your knowledge at your episode 1.
You’re going to take this knowledge and use it to teach people a new skill, or how to be more productive, or to be a better parent, and you’re going to impact other peoples lives, and in the process you’re going to impact your own. This is why I’m excited about an e-course on podcasting.

Undone is author Michele Cushatt’s quest to make peace with a complicated life. It is an honest confession of a diagnosis of cancer and the joys and disappointments of motherhood and marriage, ripe with regret over what is and, yet, still hopeful for what could be.
With enough humor to ease the rawness of the story, Undone takes the reader on a roller coaster two-year journey through the unexpectedness of life. A look back makes Michele long for a do-over, the chance to make fewer mistakes and leave less of a mess to clean up. A look forward makes Michele wonder if all her attempts to control life have robbed her of the vibrancy of it. And, in the middle of this internal chaos, she finds her once-pristine house filled with the sights and sounds of three small, uncontainable children who just want to be loved.
In the end, Undone turns complication into a beautiful canvas, angst into joy, and the unknown into an adventure, revealing that sometimes life’s most colorful and courageous stories are written right in the middle of the mess. -From the Publisher
Some things discussed on the show…
…Michele’s life changed by orders of magnitude over the span of about 8 months. She got a cancer diagnosis and 3 new (to her) children under her care during that time.
…this quote from the book “Cancer, as heinous and evil as it was, had delivered an unexpected gift. It taught us how to live. Not in regret over all the ways we wished we could go back and do it over. Not in mourning the countless unfinished, undone places that yet remained. And not in fear of the unknown future we couldn’t predict or control. Cancer–in both its presence and absence–had taught me the immeasurable value of today.”
…how the presence of God felt different to than Michele thought it would.
…how divorce is a part of Michele’s story and how that has made her more able to identify with those that have had a messy life.
…what it was like raising her own children and then essentially starting over with 3 other children.
…Michele has lived a pretty clean life and taken care of herself and her body before her diagnosis, and that moment of feel like “meaningless meaningless everything is meaningless”.
…how coming so close to the realness of death makes you treat yourself better, not physically, but internally and understanding just how valuable you are as a human being.

Malestrom builds on and expands previous books by Carolyn Custis James to explore the idea of manhood, a growing issue both in the wider culture and in the church. Until now, the entire discussion has been largely reduced to Western conceptions. Instead, James here shows how our culture’s narrow definitions of manhood are upended when we consider the examples of men in the Bible and Jesus’ gospel. Together, they show a whole new Kingdom way of being male and forging men and women into the Blessed Alliance. -From the Publisher

Jim Brownson is the James and Jean Cook Professor of New Testament at Western Theological Seminary. He’s the author of a number of books, including most recently Bible, Gender, Sexuality: Reframing the Church’s Debate on Same-Sex Relationships.

In Bible, Gender, Sexuality James Brownson argues that Christians should reconsider whether or not the biblical strictures against same-sex relations as defined in the ancient world should apply to contemporary, committed same-sex relationships. Presenting two sides in the debate — “traditionalist” and “revisionist” — Brownson carefully analyzes each of the seven main texts that appear to address intimate same-sex relations. In the process, he explores key concepts that inform our understanding of the biblical sleeping aids texts, including patriarchy, complementarity, purity and impurity, honor and shame. Central to his argument is the need to uncover the moral logic behind the biblical text. Written in order to serve and inform the ongoing debate in many denominations over the questions of homosexuality, Brownson’s in-depth study will prove a useful resource for Christians who want to form a considered opinion on this important issue. -From the Publisher.

Have you heard of N.T. Wright? You know, one of the leading New Testament scholars in the world. Yeah, that N.T. Wright. The former Bishop of Durham in the Church of England. He now serves as the Chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the School of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews. For twenty years he taught New Testament studies at Cambridge, McGill and Oxford Universities. As being both one of the world’s leading Bible scholars and a popular author, he has been featured on ABC News, Dateline, The Colbert Report, and Fresh Air.

Out of his own commitment to both historical scholarship and Christian ministry, Wright challenges us to roll up our sleeves and take seriously the study of the historical Jesus. He writes, “Many Christians have been, frankly, sloppy in their thinking and talking about Jesus, and hence, sadly, in their praying and in their practice of discipleship. We cannot assume that by saying the word Jesus, still less the word Christ, we are automatically in touch with the real Jesus who walked and talked in first-century Palestine. . . . Only by hard, historical work can we move toward a fuller comprehension of what the Gospels themselves were trying to say.” The Challenge of Jesus poses a double-edged challenge: to grow in our understanding of the historical Jesus within the Palestinian world of the first century, and to follow Jesus more faithfully into the postmodern world of the twenty-first century. – From the Publisher
Some things discussed on the show…
…associating Reformed theology with people like John Piper, Tim Keller, and others with similar theology, and that sometimes causes confusion to know that Wright sees much of his own views in line with reformed tradition, when it seems like his tone is much different that those people just mentioned.
…how do we know that God intended for his authority to be given through scripture. In other words how do we know that some day we’re not going to stand before God with him saying
‘Hey the Bible was just words that were written several thousands years ago by people who were just describing their experiences with me the best they can but it wasn’t suppose to be anything more to you than inspirational and a lose guide’ ?
….in the new introduction The Challenge of Jesus, Wright spent some time talking about the idea that he originally wrote TCoJ on the other side Sept 11, 2001. In what ways Wright thinks that changes our perspective on the words he wrote in TCoJ?
…what view the reformation brought of Jesus that was a change from the old view.
…what view the enlightenment brought.
…the historocity of Jesus and how the oral tradition worked.
…the parable of the sower in Mark 4:1-20. What we usually miss by not paying attention to Jesus’ Jewish roots.
…how all of this relates to the Christian task and vision today.

Rachel’s new book is Searching for Sunday. SfS is about Rachel’s own journey from a simple faith too one with more complexity and subtleties. Many believers, especially of the younger generations will see much of their own story in her’s. Leaving the church, starting a new one, facing failure, and finding a different form of church, Rachel brings us along for the ride.
Some things discussed on the show…
…when going through major doubt and Christians blame you for your doubt, ‘they aren’t rejecting you for being different, they’re rejecting you for being familiar’.
…when your own theological house falls down sometimes you start throwing rocks at other people houses.
…Rachel’s propensity to talk about very serious and borderline depressing subjects at social functions.
…Rachel could sell more if you just ‘crapped’ on the church and didn’t make an effort to highlight the positive things that happen with churches.
…many boiled down Rachel’s journey as going from evangelicalism to the mainline and that’s really oversimplified and half-true.
…my families own journey without a church last year.
